Soft commodity company operations can negatively impact individuals or communities, for example through land or resource conflicts, health hazards, and workers’ rights. Companies should have grievance mechanism in place to effectively identify and remedy any adverse social and environmental impacts linked to their operations. When grievance mechanisms are properly implemented by a company, it can be valuable as a risk management tool providing warnings of systematic issues, so that areas in need of improvement can be dealt with. Grievance mechanisms should be aligned with UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights: Legitimate, accessible, predictable, equitable, transparent, rights-compatible, a source of continuous learning, and based on engagement and dialogue.
